Look Like Diamonds In The Sky

"L.A. County" is one of those songs that reminds you murder ballads don't have to be dusty Appalachian relics. On the surface, it's a sparse, almost casual story song from Lyle Lovett, but underneath lurks a darkly comic tale of jealousy, violence, and consequences. Lovett delivers the narrative with his trademark deadpan restraint, letting the horror sneak up on you rather than announcing itself. The result feels less like a traditional country weeper and more like a Coen Brothers screenplay set to a gentle shuffle—equal parts unsettling, tragic, and oddly funny.
