Try Try Try To Understand…

So my talk of making booklets for my Jaguar games the other day was not idle conversation.

I have been slowly doing it for a couple of weeks now.

I set up my website downloader program and snagged them all off of the Atar Age website, resized them, and I’m in the process of coloring the outside covers before printing them and cutting them.

I have one done so far that I am extremely pleased with:

Hopefully they all look this good when done.

Did I mention that I have a printer that half-folds and booklet staples?

Oh yeah.

I do.

Game cases came in on Saturday!  Here is the Jag collection as it currently stands.

I have a couple of more to do.

I’m also working on the booklets…

The House Is A Rockin'

So I have found my first Jaguar project.  I am going to adapt the game Dragon’s Gold by D.C. Owen.

It was originally written (so far as I can gell!) for the Timex Sinclar 1000/1500.

My father brought one of those home in about the mid ‘90s along with a book titled “51 Game Programs for the Timex Sinclair 1000 and 1500” by Tim Hartnell.

That computer was a lot of fun, but extremely annoyng as well.  Some of the games were a lot of fun (Frogger was impressive), but the trick was you had to write the games and compile them before you could play them.  Not the easiest thing in the world to do. The computer’s keyboard was not a keyboard as we know them today. On no, It was a flat panel, smooth plastic job.  And the keys stuck. Oh how they stuck. One day I spent somewhere between 2 and 4 hours writing out Frogger.  I was nearly ready to go when someone set a glass of water on the table and caused the whole thing to reset itself.  Fortunately I had saved my code onto a cassette about an hour before, so I didn’t lose too much data.

I got Dragon’s Gold to compile and run exactly once. Every other time I tried ended in a similar fashion to Frogger. Anything from a cat knocking a power cord out of the wall to an incredibly finniky tapedeck to the thing just randomly resetting itself.

In the early 2000’s I decided I would take a crack at adapting it for the MS-DOS world and rewrite it in QBasic.  Before I could get very far, however, I ended up joining the Army. After getting injured and waiting to be transitioned back out I pulled out a notebook and started writing it out from memory.

By hand.

Because I’m crazy.

Somewhere along the line (probably when my apartment melted!) I lost said notebook.  Probably not a bad thing…My simple text based adventure game was suffering from “Feature Creep” wherein I was attempting to add too much to it.

So here I am. About to restart this from scratch for an actual video game console. Here is hoping I get somewhere with it!

I Think I Need A Lear Jet

Earlier this afternoon I decided that I am going to write at least one game for the Atari Jaguar.  Ideally I would like to start with a simple text-based adventure game and eventually get comfortable enough with the language hand hardware to develop an early Final Fantasy clone for the system.

I got the coding software set up on a clean laptop and wrote and compiled my first piece of Jaguar code…

vim screencompiler screen

And you know what?  It ran!

virtual jag screen

I realize that getting a version of the Basic programming language to print a line of text on a screen doesn’t seem that hard, but I can run this off onto a cartridge, plug it into a Jaguar and it would actually show MY LINE OF TEXT on a television screen through a video game console.  Yeah, I’m a little excited about this one.

THUNDER

My Doom case came in today…Honestly I like it!  It is very well done!

My biggest gripe is that the cartridge does not fit snugly.  At all. It just sort of sits there.

Granted, the Atari Jaguar is a long dead system and they never made hardshell cases for the cartridges, so it is what it is.

I ordered 20 of the universal game cases on my own…Honestly, I can only hope that mine look half as professional as this.  If they do, I might go into business selling them on my own self.

Baby Told Me Late Last Night

New game, controller and A REAL A/V CABLE(!) arrived today.  Man oh man but this thing looks great now!

Picked up a copy of Pitfall The Mayan Adventure for cheap…One of the secrets is a port of the original Pitfall! for the Atari!

Looks great!

Sharpen Up Those Fangs

Bought a custom cartridge case for my Atari Jaguar cartridges today.

It’s (allegedly) a plastic hardshell case that comes with artwork.  I picked Doom to be my first cased game.

I’ll post an update when it arrives.

It’s All In My Heart

Okay.

Update.

At long last.

My Atari Jaguar.

The CD-Rom works!

20180417_08295420180417_083001

Myst is in the drive right now. Yes.It is a burned disc.

20180417_08301620180417_083024

Yes. The Jaguar is okay with that!

I had to do some cleaning on the Memory Track to get it to function and save my games, but that also works.

My existing cartridge library:

Every now and again I find one for a reasonable price online and will buy it.

You Know It’s All Right

So…Apparently I am a huge nerd. This is according to my wife.

Today I found a wiring diagram and built an A/V Cable for my Atari Jaguar so that I can actually play the thing on a modern TV.

Here is what I have:

IMG_20160123_224151

I used 3 A/V cables from some AT&T U-Verse returns from work and the connector from a 5.25” floppy disk cable.

The results are most definitely usable!

I am happy about this!

Next project? Get the CD-Rom working! Rumor has it all of the Jaguar CD games are A-Available for download and B-Work just fine on standard CD-R discs.

Won’t You Take Me Home Tonight

Ford 3

So many a thing hath happened.
Started attempting to acquire the Doctor Who from 1963 to 1989.  We shall see how that goes.
Started attempting to get the Atari Jaguar to function proper again.  Have been partially successful.  Can play, it just looks like the Devil (No, not because I was playing Doom)

Also, work is also the devil.
