When The Leaders That You Choose Really Don't Fit The Shoes

Happy Election Day!  Here is the last (hopefully, but unlikely) of the political posts for the season.  This does, however, make the end of the stuff out of America: The Book.

Competition In Other Places

I was reading the following article this morning and I really found the part about the con artists very intriguing.  It is amazing how accurate it is if you put up every little detail of your life onto social media and do not do anything with your privacy settings.  Even then though, Facebook (I'm pretty sure, I need to go read through their Ts & Cs again) owns everything you post.

The TV show Castle did a fun episode about a con man a few years back.  That was one of my favorites.

Anyway, here is the article:

A conversation with...

Maria Konnikova Shows Her Cards

The well-regarded science writer took up poker while researching a book. Now she’s on the professional circuit.

"Luck is just … randomness," said Maria Konnikova. "That’s what I wanted to write about. Poker was a way into it."CreditJoshua Bright for The New York Times
As a science writer at The New Yorker, Maria Konnikova, 34, focuses on the brain, and the weird and interesting ways people use their brains.
Dr. Konnikova is an experimental psychologist trained at Columbia University. But her latest experiment is on herself. For a book she’s researching on luck and decision-making, Dr. Konnikova began studying poker.
Within a year, she had moved from poker novice to poker professional, winning more than $200,000 in tournament jackpots. This summer Poker Stars, an online gaming site, began sponsoring Dr. Konnikova in professional tournaments.
We spoke recently for two hours at the offices of The Times. An edited and condensed version of the conversation follows.

You’ve taken a year’s sabbatical from The New Yorker to play on the professional poker circuit. Why?

I’d been thinking, for a while, about what my next book was going to be. I was interested in the theme of skill versus chance and was looking for a way to get into it. A friend suggested I read John von Neumann’s “Theory of Games and Economic Behavior,” the foundational text of game theory.
Von Neumann, as you know, was one of the geniuses of the 20th century — the hydrogen bomb, computing, economics. And he’d been a poker player. It turned out that all of game theory came out of poker!

When he was trying to understand how strategic decision-making worked, he concluded that poker was the perfect analog, because it was a blend of skill and chance and because, over the long run, skill can win. I decided that poker was the way to go.
I knew I’d need to spend a few months living in that world. I thought, “I’m going to have to dedicate myself to this like a career, because otherwise it’s just going to be ‘a writer dabbles in the world of poker.’”

Did you have a background in the game?

No, no. When I started this, I didn’t know how many cards were in a deck. I hate casinos. I have zero interest in gambling.

Then I met Erik Seidel, one of the best poker players in the world. He agreed to become my coach, though he told me, “You’re a hard worker, and you have a good background for this, but who knows if you’re going to be any good?”
It’s been an unexpected journey. I don’t think anyone could have predicted that I would have gone in less than a year from not knowing how many cards were in a deck to winning a major poker title.

What did that involve?

I’ve been studying, playing, living, breathing poker for eight to nine hours a day. Every day! When I’m between events and in New York, I’m reading, watching videos or live-streaming very good players.
There might be a specific concept I want to work on, and I’ll watch some videos of people doing this and take notes. Sometimes I’ll go to New Jersey and hop onto the poker website at an internet cafe. Online poker is illegal in New York, but not in Jersey.

When Erik Seidel said you had the right background, what did he mean?

I think he was talking about my background in experimental psychology. I did a doctorate on overconfidence and risky decision-making with Walter Mischel, who invented the “marshmallow test.”
I wanted to see if people with high levels of self-control made better decisions in risky conditions, like in the stock market. Usually, people with high self-control do so much better at everything than people with low self-control.
But it ends up that in unpredictable environments like the stock market, successful high self-control people — when in an environment where control is taken away from them — take longer to figure things out. They are too confident and won’t take negative feedback from the environment.
Whereas people with lower self-control and who aren’t as successful — they’re like, “Uh oh, a bad thing is happening. I guess I should actually figure that out.”

Are the other poker pros nice to you?

For the most part. I’ve been very lucky because my coach introduced me to high-level players. They are not only brilliant but nice, and they’ve taken me under their wing.
So yeah, there are people who aren’t nice to me. I mean, I’ve been called everything at the poker table. I’ve been propositioned at the poker table — like, actually propositioned!

Was it an attempt to throw you off your game or to get you to his room?

Probably both. I called the “floor,” which is management, and had him moved to another table.

If poker is an analog to real life, does it help or hurt to be a woman?

Obviously, the first thing people notice about me is my gender. And people stereotype.
When you see someone looking a certain way, you assume they play a certain way. So once I figure out how they view women, I can figure out how to play against them. They’re not seeing me as a poker player, they’re seeing me as a female poker player.
There are people who’d rather die than be bluffed by a woman. They’ll never fold to me because that’s an affront to their masculinity.
I never bluff them. I know that no matter how strong my hand, they are still going to call me because they just can’t fold to a girl.
Other people think women are incapable of bluffing. They think if I’m betting really aggressively, it means I have an incredibly strong hand. I bluff those people all the time.
There are people who think that women shouldn’t be at a poker table, and they try to bully me. So, what do I do? I let them. And I wait to be in a good position so that I can take their chips. Just like life, right?

Your last book, “The Confidence Game,” was about con artists. Is there a thematic connection to the topics you write about?

The motive for this book was about getting back to what I’d studied in grad school: the illusion of control. How much of our lives do we actually control — and can we tell the difference?
People often ascribe everything good to skill. And then when bad things happen, they say, “Oh, it’s bad luck.” Or they say, “You make your luck.”
That’s just empirically impossible. And it drives me crazy because luck, by definition, is something you can’t make. Luck is just … randomness. So that’s what I wanted to write about. Poker was a way into it.
Now, it is true that I’ve long been preoccupied with the darker side of humanity. I’m interested in deviations because they make you notice the normal. In psychology, you learn a lot about the brain by looking at the deviant cases.
When you ask if my books have a progression, I’d say the world of con artists has a lot of overlap with poker because of belief, deception, figuring out what people are representing.

Do you have any insights on why grifting schemes appear to be proliferating?

Fraud really thrives in moments of great social change and transition. We’re in the midst of a technological revolution. That gives con artists huge opportunities. People lose their frame of reference for what can and can’t be real.
Are there more con artists now? It’s more that technology made conning easier.
Before, if you wanted to con someone, you had to do expend a lot of energy doing research. Was a person a good target? Today, we’re all on Twitter and Facebook, putting out all this information about ourselves.
With cellphones and emails, it’s much easier to inundate a large number of people and to catch one person at a vulnerable moment. In the past, the grifter would have a lot of misses. Now, they don’t care if they’ll have a thousand misses. All they need is one hit.

You’ve earned so far over $200,000 at the table. Few writers make that sort of money. Will you be quitting your day job?

For the next year, yes. But I’m never going to stop being a writer. Why can’t I do both? I love poker. Why would I stop?

The Best Part Of Waking Up

So the condition of the roads in Indiana has been a major point of stress for me so far in 2018.  Back in January I hit a pothole that ripped the strut mount off of my car and broke a ball joint as well.

I have read about people taking matters into their own hands and filling them in themselves, but this is a completely different approach to the matter.

Domino's Pizza has apparently taken to filling in potholes...For the pizzas!

The bit in the article about it feeling like a William Gibson novel is somewhat inaccurate.  It is more likely that this is the sort of thing that Uncle Enzo would take care of in Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

But I strongly agree that it is embarrassing that a pizza delivery chain has taken to road repair on their own dime.

We're Just Waiting For The Hammer To Fall

A while back I had posted a link to a BBC article about a firebombing and an article out of a magazine about banning guns. All of which was inspired by the Florida School Shooting in February of 2018.

I would like to present, for your consideration:

I realize this falls outside of the realm of "normal," but if she was not allowed to carry, well...I don't want to think about it.

Tounge Tied & Twisted

Let us talk about Drinko de Mayo for a few minutes…

According to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture about the origin of the observance of Cinco de Mayo in the United States, the modern American focus on that day first started in California in 1863 in response to the resistance to French rule in Mexico.[29] "Far up in the gold country town of Columbia (now Columbia State Park) Mexican miners were so overjoyed at the news that they spontaneously fired off rifle shots and fireworks, sang patriotic songs and made impromptu speeches."[30]

A 2007 UCLA Newsroom article notes that, "the holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico."[29] TIME magazine reports that "Cinco de Mayo started to come into vogue in 1940s America during the rise of the Chicano Movement."[20] The holiday crossed over from California into the rest of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s but did not gain popularity until the 1980s when marketers, especially beer companies, capitalized on the celebratory nature of the day and began to promote it.[31][32] It grew in popularity and evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, first in areas with large Mexican-American populations, like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and San Jose.[33]

In a 1998 study in the Journal of American Culture it was reported that there were more than 120 official US celebrations of Cinco de Mayo in 21 different states. An update in 2006 found that the number of official Cinco de Mayo events was 150 or more, according to José Alamillo, a professor of ethnic studies at Washington State University in Pullman, who has studied the cultural impact of Cinco de Mayo north of the border.[34] Los Angeles' Fiesta Broadway has been billed as the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world, which it most certainly was at its peak in the 1990s when it attracted crowds of 500,000 or more. In recent years attendance has seen a dramatic decrease.[35][36]

On June 7, 2005, the United States Congress issued a concurrent resolution calling on the President of the United States to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities.[37] To celebrate, many display Cinco de Mayo banners while school districts hold special events to educate students about its historical significance. Special events and celebrations highlight Mexican culture, especially in its music and regional dancing. Examples include baile folklórico and mariachi demonstrations held annually at the Plaza del Pueblo de Los Ángeles, near Olvera Street. Commercial interests in the United States have capitalized on the celebration, advertising Mexican products and services, with an emphasis on alcoholic beverages,[38][39] foods, and music.[40][41]

Dancin' In The Streets Of Hyannis

More like #TakeBackOurGrammar!

Also, let us not forget that David Bowie and "Ric Edelman" AKA Alan Rickman weren't exactly Americans.

I guess the first two deaths were actually Common Sense and Simple English?

Don't Get A Nosebleed, Don't Get Upset

Dear 'Merca,

Has it really come to this? I realize the notion of dumping a can of condensed soup and a can of water in a pan on the stove it too much.  But I thought we were still in the prime of the "dump a can of soup and a can of water in a big bowl and microwave it" age.

Clearly the time of the microwave has been and gone and forgot to take my head out of the sand.

So, I guess I tip my hat to you, Campbell's for getting in on the ground floor of the K-Cup rage.

Kudos to you.

I Want To Lie Shipwrecked And Comotose

Original Title: It is cold outside

Spike
I just watched the first 3 minutes of the Unaired American pilot episode of Red Dwarf.
My thoughts on the subject are as follows:
1:50 Sex joke already
2:00 Kryten...Thank God
Rimmer...gay? Seems that way.
Lister? Not a British sleazeball? Inconceiveable!
Unaired...Thankfully

Its cold outside,
There's no kind of atmosphere,
I'm all alone,
More or less.
Let me fly,
Far away from here,
Fun, fun, fun,
In the sun, sun, sun.

I want to lie,
Shipwrecked and comotose,
Drinking fresh,
Mango juice,
Goldfish shoals,
Nibbling at my toes,
Fun, fun, fun,
In the sun, sun, sun,
Fun, fun, fun,
In the sun, sun, sun.

We've Got To Move These Color TVs

Spike
-->Disclaimer: Extremely long entry. For those of you who don't read, the shorter, severly dumbed down version is this: "Television is a waste. It destroys lives."<-- br="">
Picture this: 1:15 am. Nothing to do. Totally unable to sleep due to consuming 6 cans of Mountain Dew in something like 6 hours. Thinking of updating my diary. I get side-tracked reading through someone else's diary. When I stumble upon something that is so utterly true and more or less my exact opinion on the subject. The subject in question is stupidity on TV. Here is that little gem I stumbled across:

"MY SACRIFICE

I, (insert my name here), on this blisteringly cold second of February, have watched my last minute of cable television. I turned the channel from Law & Order, a very interesting and intelligent show, to a show called “Son of the Beach,” and felt my intelligence quotient fall significantly as I slumped in my seat in disgust at this waste of unheardof sums of money. Just to think that the American public demands shows like this… that there are children that don’t know where their next meal is coming from and millions are being spent on these horrific displays of what people used to call “entertainment.” Bleached blonde silicon-stuffed sex kittens that entirely antagonize the idea of “female role model” are plastered across this show, spread eagle to these awful steroid-injected, melanoma-skinned moron men. The main ideas on this show are sex, the beach, stupidity, sex, slapstick comedy, the beach, and sex. And stupidity. Money is needed for AIDS research, cancer research, revamping educational systems, and millions upon millions are being wasted on duplicates upon duplicates of shows with the same stupid plot (that doesn’t exist), and the same stupid characters. This new generation of reality shows… stranding people on islands, placing random people in a living situation together, putting people in a place where they’re told to screw around with as many people as possible, putting people under strange circumstances and make them answer questions. I think we can all name at least two shows for each description I mentioned. Utter stupidity in this country of waste. While on the subject, I’m going to tell you the story of a man, and his decline into popular culture. This man graduated from Tulane University, and got his law degree from Northwestern in 1968. He worked on Senator Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign, until the senator’s assassination. He was elected the mayor of Cincinnati at age 33, making him one of the country’s youngest mayors, to date. In the early eighties, his career turned to broadcasting, where he was named Cincinnati’s top rated anchorman, with his name engraved into seven Emmy statues. This man is Jerry Springer, the king of the most abhorring exhibition of humankind in American mass media. Whenever I flip through the channels, it makes me ashamed to be an American to know that this is one of the most top-rated shows in my country. America used to be the land of promise, the land of prosperity and hope… immigrants used to move to our country looking for a better life, and THIS is what we have for them? Welcome to our disturbed popular culture… where sexual experimentation and violent explosions rule the mass entertainment media. America is the country of freedom, as we all know, so under the amendment of freedom of speech, these shows will forever continue to grace our presence. God bless America. I am not arguing the freedom of speech. I’m using it right now. I’m arguing the fact that we air shows that are sheer stupidity. There are good television shows, there are outstanding television shows. There are television shows that are so good that I shiver to think of them. Great plots, great stories, incredible writing. Television shows can be a truly mastered art. There is no point to the Jerry Springer show. This is not entertainment. Anyone who finds this entertaining for more than five minutes has the intelligence of a pile of shit. I, (insert my name here), have officially given up with television. I want to hang myself from a large international television satellite and hope that my rotting corpse will intercept at least one show, one terrible, disgusting show, so that maybe one child, somewhere, wouldn't have to feel the gruesome shame of being an American in the new millennium."

::me again::

That came from defatigued.diaryland.com. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for so beautifully expressing my feelings on the subject of television. I realize that I seem crazy to be thanking a total stranger, but whatever.

It's not just reality shows. Have you seen or read (I am aware of the fact that reading seems to physically hurt so many people nowadays, but I reluctantly included it. So, if it hurts you, send me some hate - mail, and then look into an education. You illerate freak!) some of the things that actually make the news anymore? I have some examples in some of my older entries. The thing with the turtle for example. For those of you who don't know the story, go read it. It's one of the "Modern stupidity" entries. I mean come on. Get real now. A turtle loses the use of it's back legs in a shoot-out. Someone donates a TV cart. Turtle can move again. End of story. PATHETIC!

You have the talk shows like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones. You have the reality shows like Survivor 1-27. We have an entire network dedicated to broadcasting almost nothing but mind rotting filth (The FOX network for those of you who have become mindless zombies!). You have the supposedly not fake sporting shows (i.e. WWF Wrestling). You have the movies that are horrible, yet rake in millions of dollars.

You have the actors and actresses of all of the above living like gods for basically being stupid for a few million people for a brief time. They, in turn, have the press hounding them during their every waking moment. So therefore they also end up putting their personal lives (i.e. that show on MTV about celebrities' homes) up for grabs in the public domain. And then, the afore mentioned celebrity can not find work due to the mind altering hallucinagenic drugs they end up being addicted to in order to escape the horrible existance that is associated with being famous. At which point the celeb drops off the face of the earth, and, in effect, escapes the horrors of being famous. Finally, after many months or years, the person gets cleaned up. Makes a grand comeback to the entertainment world. Cycle then starts over again.

Basically television is a waste. It could be used for good if people were not stupid. There. It's out. That's how I feel about that issue.
